Many of us know something about the famed Grimke sisters, mid-19th century abolitionists and feminists, and many have read of them in Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings. But did you know that in the 1830s, both sisters visited Shrewsbury, staying with friends on Sycamore Avenue and attending the Quaker Meeting here? Or that their father John Grimke is buried in the Christ Church graveyard?

Louise Knight, author of a forthcoming book (in 2024) about the sisters, gave a talk on them on May 8, at the Christ Church Parish House.
